Child and Youth Programme

The Child and Youth Program existed since 1994. The
philosophy that was behind the creation of the program had
related to the fact that young people under 18 years was the
majority of the population of African countries and therefore the
problem of children and youth are found in all
levels of African society, contemporary forms and
proportions never known before.

It should therefore provide the
African academic community tools to study the
issue of children and youth. The objective of the Program
is to build capacity in research on
childhood and youth and to promote links between researchers
and research users.

Compared to the first component of the program, two actions
important have been undertaken. The first has to do
Update on research in the field through the production of a
Annotated Bibliography on Children in Africa (Annotated
Bibliography on Childhood, with Emphasis on Africa: Outline, General
Research Findings and Recommendations, Patti Henderson) and produced
published by CODESRIA in 2002 in his series of monographs. The
second was a symposium jointly organized by CODESRIA,
Childwatch International Institute for the Study of Youth
University of Cape Town (South Africa) and the Department of
Psychology of Jomo Kenyatta University (Kenya) in 2006 which gave
place in a monograph on "Child Research in Africa".

During the last three years the research component of
program has experienced some revitalization with the introduction of
National Working Groups (NWG) and multinational groups of
Work (MWG) dedicated specifically to the problems facing children and
