The year 2014 has been an eventful but successful year for us in CODESRIA. We look towards the year 2015 with great optimism for our continent, especially with regard to the progress of democracy and the search for solutions to challenges such as those posed by the Ebola Virus Disease.

For CODESRIA, 2015 will be the year of our 14th General Assembly, which will be held from 8-12 June 2015. We will also be launching a number of new research programmes and new journals. Important events lined up for the New Year include the Africa Higher Education Summit (Dakar, 10-12 March 2015; theme: “Revitalising Higher Education for Africa’s Future”. CODESRIA is one of the lead organisers); and the World Social Science Forum (jointly hosted by CODESRIA and the Human Sciences Research Council of South Africa; Durban, 13-16 September 2015; theme: "Transforming global relations for a just world").
December 2014 marks the first anniversary of the departure of the great Madiba, Nelson Mandela. In this issue of the newsletter you will find an article by Professor Sabelo J. Ndlovu-Gatsheni, of the Archie Mafeje Research Institute, University of South Africa entitled Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela as an Embodiment and Paradigm of Peace.
