Multinational Working Groups 2015 Competition

Application deadline: February 28, 2015

Number of visits: 2912

The Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) invites proposals from African and Diaspora researchers for its 2015 Multinational Working Groups Competition. CODESRIA is a Pan-African membership research organization established in 1973 with the broad goal of promoting the work of African and Diaspora social scientists. The Council’s Multinational Working Groups Competition is meant to get researchers from multiple African countries to individually explore clearly specified themes whose currency spans multiple countries. While not being expressly comparative in approach, the exploration of the same issue in multiple national settings is supposed to facilitate better understands of it that are grounded in its multiple manifestations and evolutions across space.

Researchers apply as individuals with clearly-thought out projects. CODESRIA’s evaluators will identify the best applications and the Council will constitute groups of 12 to 15 researchers around dominant themes. Each group constituted will be led by a CODESRIA-appointed coordinator who will oversee group activities, follow up on progress by members, facilitate the exchange of ideas among group members and help ensure quality. The Multinational Working Groups Competition provides grants of USD 5000 to each researcher over a 15-month period to facilitate the completion of already-started work. Researchers are supposed to produce an article or book chapter at the end of the grant period.

Priority thematic areas for the 2015 Multinational Working Groups Competition are:

1. Youth and the political economy of extractive sectors in Africa;
2. Epidemics and governance: public health and the dynamics of control and resistance in colonial and postcolonial Africa;
3. Gendered understandings of and approaches to environmental governance in Africa;
4. Inserting climate change and climate change adaptations and mitigation in the historical logics of domination, marginalization and exploitation in Africa;
5. The African Diaspora and higher education reforms in postcolonial Africa: The ethics, politics and economics of exchanges.
Interested researchers should submit application packages containing the following required materials. Please note that applications that lack any of these elements will not be considered.

  • A proposal with the following sections: an introduction; statement and contextualization of question; brief review of literature and/or competing hypotheses; study design and research methodology; the theoretical and practical significance of the study; any progress made so far on the subject of the proposal; and a brief summary of budget and research plan. Proposals must be submitted as Word documents and should be 10 pages long (font type: Times New Roman; font size: 12; line spacing: double). Brief budgets, which should be incorporated into proposals, should take into consideration the fact that MWGs have a strict 15-month lifespan.
