Leadership Dialogue on Open Access and African Research Publishing in the 21st Century: A One-day Forum organised by South African Regional Universities Association

Number of visits: 826

Venue: Cape Town International Convention Centre in South Africa;
Date: May 3 2016
Time: 8.30 am-1.00pm.

The Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) was prominently recognised during a one day forum organised by the Southern African Regional Universities Association, pre-event to the GoingGlobal Conference. Both events held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre in South Africa. Designed to examine and promote the involvement and role of Southern African Universities administrators towards open access movement, the Forum examined changing policy environment in respect of scholarly publishing, research values in a changing world and the continued but unwanted role of the multinational publishers. It also examined the sustainability of open access in Southern Africa and a vision statement for Southern African open access strategies was developed. The peak of the event was the prominence and obvious influence of the CODESRIA Dakar Declaration on Open Access Publishing in the Global South that occurred during the Fourth Electronic Conference during March 29-April 2016. Besides the Declaration being read in the Forum, two scholars who did not attend the Dakar Conference focussed their presentations on the Dakar Declaration, calling for action plan for implementation in order to guide Open Access Publishing activities in Africa.
