Welcome to CODESRIA Newsletter Issue Number 21. The Colloquium on Thinking African, organized in recognition of the contribution of Thandika Mkandawire to the development of CODESRIA and to the advancement of knowledge production in Africa and around the world and the International Conference on Academic Freedom were two successful events. They took place in Lilongwe, Malawi from 11 to 13 April 2016. In this issue you will find articles related to these events. The Fourth CODESRIA Conference on Electronic Publishing titled Open Access and the Future of Africa’s Knowledge Economy has come and gone. CODESRIA is thankful to everybody for making the conference a successful event. Many thanks to the government of Senegal and its Ministry of Culture and Communication for the Opening Ceremony chaired by the M. Remy Sagna and the closing ceremony by the Minister himself, M. Mbagnick Ndiaye. Thanks go to UNESCO for sponsoring the South-South Panel of five, and other organisations and eminent persons who graced the occasion. In this newsletter you will find key communications that occurred during the conference and selected media reports.

Creating CODESRIA was not as easy as it seems. One of the council founding members, Professor Samir Amin was invited by TFM journalist and commentator, Alassane Samba Diop. Watch an interesting piece about the early years of CODESRIA.
You will also find in this issue, CODESRIA’s upcoming events and activities. Enjoy your reading.
