Our Funders

CODESRIA’s funding is derived from a number of donors that fall into three broad categories: Core Donors, Collaborative Projects Donors and Project-Specific Donors.

1°) Core Donors

The most significant group of donors comprises those that provide core funding to the Council. These donors support CODESRIA’s intellectual agenda set forth by the General Assembly at its triennial meetings and which is described in detail in the Councils Strategic Plans. CODESRIA is at liberty to allocate the core funds received to the various programmes it wishes to pursue with additional funds being provided for programme support and monitoring. Core donors provide funding on a three-year cycle on the basis of proposals submitted by CODESRIA and, in any one year, provide up to 70% of the financing of the Council. CODESRIA’s ability to attract core donors is due to the transparent policies and procedures it has developed over the years, its record of timely reporting and the constant dialogue it maintains with the donors concerned on its work. Among the Core Donors we currently have, in alphabetical order are:

- The African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF)
- The Danish Foreign Ministry
- The Dutch Foreign Ministry
- The Ford Foundation
- The Government of the Republic of Senegal
- The Norwegian International Development Agency (NORAD)
- The Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA)

2°) Collaborative Projects Partners and Donors

CODESRIA has signed various contracts with organisations which support activities that are co-funded in partnership with CODESRIA and on the basis of expense and/or activity sharing. Separate administration costs are factored into the contracts to cover the administrative overhead. Among the Collaborative Projects, Partners and Donors we curently have, in alphabetical order are:

- Carnegie Corporation of New York
- The International Development Research Centre (IDRC)
- The Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA)
- The Partnership for Higher Education
- The Prince Claus Foundation
- The Rockefeller Foundation
- Trust Africa

3°) Project-Specific Donors

CODESRIA also establishes contracts with various donors who fund specific projects and programmes. These projects comprise activities on research areas of common interest and cover varying periods of time but, on average, are usually less than 18 months. Among the Project-Specific Donors we currently have, in alphabetical order are:

- Comparative Research Programme on Poverty (CROP)
- Coopération Française
- Oxfam GB
- Plan International
- United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF)
- United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM)
- United Nation Development Programme (UNDP)
