Increasingly, education systems must serve not only its country\u2019s citizens, <\/i>but immigrants and refugees from the world over who are entering host <\/i>countries for a variety of reasons: to escape war-torn countries, to provide <\/i>a better life for their families, to access better education, for employment <\/i>and health care opportunities, and to engage in business. This book sets <\/i>out to explore across various sites immigrant youth\u2019s early encounters with <\/i>literacy and the implications of these encounters for their careers as readers <\/i>and writers, in- and out of school. Given the vast gulf between children <\/i>who \u2000 ourish and those who do not, the book further sets out to investigate <\/i>potential collaborations between and implications of formal classrooms <\/i>and informal learning that has the potential to \u2000 ourish in a range of outof- <\/i>school settings. Through multiple case studies, the authors conduct <\/i>interviews with immigrant parents, children, and their teachers, as well <\/i>conduct observations in classrooms and homes. Further, the work aims to <\/i>explore possibilities around how literacy research can help us re-think and <\/i>re-contextualise literacy teaching and learning across a range of contexts, <\/i>as well as their implications for curriculum and pedagogy.<\/i><\/p>\n

Leila Kajee<\/strong> is Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Johannesburg in <\/i>South Africa. Her research interests include Language and Literacies, through sociocultural, <\/i>postcolonial and critical lenses. She also teaches Language and Literacies to undergraduate <\/i>and postgraduate students in the Faculty of Education.
