The Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) is pleased to announce the award of 12 grants to African academics in the Diaspora for visiting fellowships to African universities. The grantees will spend time in a number of African universities to undertake specific academic activities aimed at strengthening teaching and research in the Social sciences, Humanities and Higher Education studies. The tenure of the visiting professorship will range from 2 weeks to three months.
As part of its thematic priorities for its 2017-2021 program cycle, CODESRIA is implementing the African Academic Diaspora Support to African Universities programme with support from the Carnegie Corporation of New York (CCNY). The program seeks to mobilize the African academic diaspora to support African universities and to strengthen the linkages between African academics in the diaspora and their counterparts in African Universities.

The 2019 Grantees are

  1. Jospeter Mbuba: Dr. Mbuba is a Professor and Director of Graduate Studies, Department of Public Policy, Purdue University Fort Wayne USA. Prof Mbuba will be attached to Chuka University in Kenya from the 1st of June to the 31st of August 2019. During the three months fellowship at Chuka University, he is expected to develop a Doctoral curriculum in criminal justice, mentor masters’ and doctoral students as well as early-career academics and engage in collaborative research.
  2. Raymond Tutu Asare: Dr. Raymond Tutu Asare is an Associate Professor of Geography, Global Societies Programe, College of Humanities, Education, and Social Sciences, Delaware State University, USA. He will be proceeding to Kampala International University, Uganda from the 27th of June to the 31st of July 2019, where he is expected to establish research collaborations, co-supervise Master of Arts in Geography students and participate in curriculum review.
  3. Ahmed Ibrahim: Dr. Ahmed Ibrahim is an Assistant Professor at the department of Sociology and Anthropology, Carleton College, Northfield, USA. He will be undertaking his fellowship at the University of Dar Es Salam in Tanzania from the 1st of September to the 30th November 2019. While at UDSM, he is expected to work with colleagues in the Department of Sociology to review the current curriculum, deliver lectures and supervise post graduate students
  4. David Mwambari: Dr. Mwambari is a lecturer at the Department of Peace studies, University of Ghent, Belguim. He will be proceeding to Moi University in Kenya from the 1st of June to the 31st of August 2019. While at Moi University, he is expected to deliver post graduate trainings in research methodology, establish research collaboration and co-supervise post graduate students
  5. Mumin Adetunji: Dr Adetunji is a Senior Lecturer in Information Systems, Nottingham Business School, Nottingham Trent University. Dr. Adetunji will be carrying out his fellowship at the University of Pretoria, South Africa from July 15th to August 9th, 2019. He will specifically be attached to the Albert Luthuli Centre for Responsible Leadership, where he will partake in research on leadership, sustainability, and information systems disciplines. He is also expected to organize training workshops on the above subjects for advanced doctoral and post-doctoral students in the university.
  6. Peter Memiah: Assistant Professor of Public Health, University of West Florida USA. He will be undertaking his fellowship at The Institute of Development Studies, University of Nairobi from the 1st of June to the 31st of September 2019. Dr. Memiah has established a partnership with the Institute for Development Studies which seeks to train and mentor postgraduate students and undertake interdisciplinary research linking Humanities and Social Sciences and Medical Research.
  7. Maria Paula Meneses : Dr Meneses is a Senior Lecturer at the Centre for Social Studies (CES), University of Coimbra and will be going to Eduardo Mondlane University, Mozambique for a two week fellowship to follow up on an ongoing project aimed at familiarizing academics and students at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences with the problematics of epistemic freedom in Africa
  8. Clapperton Mavhunga: Prof Mavhunga is an Associate Professor of Science, Technology, and Society at MIT. Prof Mavhunga will spend three months, from September to November 2019 at the University of Cape Town, South Africa in furtherance of a curriculum and institute building activity that the university had proposed to CODESRIA in 2018 titled “Institute for Community-based Research, Experimentation, and Beneficiation,”.
  9. Samuel Adu Prah: Prof Adu Prah is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Geography and Geology at Sam Houston State University (Huntsville, Texas) who will be going to the University of Science and Technology, Kumasi Ghana from the 15th of June through to the 31st of July 2019. During this time he is expected to teach a four week summer workshop on geospatial technologies and work with Masters and PHD students to implement geospatial technologies in their research.
  10. Shadrack Nasong’o : Prof Nasongo’o is a Professor at the Department of International Studies of Rhodes College, North Parkway, Memphis USA. He will be undertaking his fellowship at Riara University in Kenya from the 1st of June to the 31st of July 2019. During this fellowship, he is expected to shape and model a graduate program in International Relations and Diplomacy.
  11. Chibueze Udeani: Prof. Udeani is a Professor at the Julius-Maximilian-University Würzburg, Germany. He will be carrying out his fellowship at the University of Nigeria Nsukka from the 1st of July to the 31st of August 2019. During this fellowship, he is expected to develop and strengthen the curriculum for emerging courses on religion and spirituality and also serve as resource person in upcoming training seminars and workshops organized by the Department of Social work.
  12. Ndiranyu Wachanga: Professor Wachanga is a Professor with tenure at University of Wisconsin- Whitewater, USA. He will be attached to the United States International University in Kenya from the 1st of June to 31st of August 2019. During this three months fellowship, he is expected to develop courses for a documentary filmmaking program for the university’s newly created Department of Cinematic Arts.
