UNCTAD and the Post 2015 Agenda

Nombre de visites : 1633

UNCTAD’s first policy brief on the post-2015 sustainable development agenda highlights the need to reform the global economic and financial system, if the goal of eradicating poverty is to become a reality. The opening paragraph of the Final Act of the first United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD I) reads in part : “The States participating in the Conference are determined... to find ways by which the human and material resources of the world may be harnessed for the abolition of poverty everywhere.” It goes on to recognize that “if privilege, extremes of wealth and poverty, and social injustice persist, then the goal of development is lost,” and that “national exertions [of developing countries to raise the living standards of their peoples] will be greatly impaired if not supplemented and strengthened by constructive international action based on respect for national sovereignty”.
