Free Dr Homa Hoodfar, Professor of Anthropology, University Concordia, Montreal, Canada

Dear Colleagues,

Dr. Homa Hoodfar, a highly respected professor at the University Concordia, Montreal, Canada, has been detained at the Evin prison in Tehran, on Monday 6 June 2016. She was visiting Iran, for family matters.
Professor Hoodfar of Iranian origin, with Canadian and Irish nationalities, is a world-renowned anthropologist of the Middle East, and has an extensive publication record. She has been teaching at the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Concordia University in Montreal, Canada since 1991. She has published extensively on gender and development, Muslim family law, refugees, informal economy, Muslim dress code, and gendered electoral politics. She has carried out anthropological research in Egypt, Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Canada. She has also been involved with research-based networks such as Women Living Under Muslim Laws and Shirkat Gah.

We request the Iranian authorities to provide Dr. Hoodfar immediate access to her family and lawyer, ensure she has the medicines she requires for her neurological illness, and release Dr. Hoodfar and to return her passport.

We launched an international campaign to free our colleague and friend Homa Hoodfar and would like your assistance.
