From 20th to 22nd November 2017Number of visits: 2022
Next week from 20th to 22nd November 2017, the Council for the Development of Social Science in Africa (CODESRIA), will partner with the SARChi Chair in Social Policy at UNISA and UNRISD to host a conference on Social Policy in Africa. CODESRIA’s support for and participation in the conference is strategic. It continues a tradition of research and publications on Social Policy at CODESRIA. Perhaps, out of the many works done at CODESRIA that had major policy implications and impact, the work on industrialisation, on the land and agrarian question, on democratic governance, on higher education in Africa and on Structural Adjustment Programmes stand out most strongly. In 1996, focused work on social policy was up-scaled with the launching of the Multi-National Working Group on Globalisation and Social Policy in Africa and eventual publication of Tade Aina’s co-edited work on Globalisation and Social Policy in Africa, (CODESRIA, 2000). Since then, CODESRIA members have sustained research on the theme albeit through other institutions like UNRISD. We opted to join and support the Social Policy in Africa Conference because it fits into our long term research interests and in the current Strategic Plan 2017-2022 which has identified the Reflections on Policy Series as a core part of the work to be pursued by the Council. We have already started conversations with partners and we aim to pursue work in this area going forward. It is not lost on the Council that almost everything touching on the ordinary lives of people on the continent is framed around a public and social policy framework. In participating in this conference, we aim to re-start a CODESRIA conversation on policy issues in general and social policy in particular.
