Background
The Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) with support from the Carnegie Corporation of New York (CCNY) is implementing an intervention to support Doctoral Students registered in African universities, pursuing studies in the Humanities, Social Sciences and Higher Education Studies. The support entails placing the students under the CODESRIA College of Mentors to benefit from academic advice from senior academics having similar research interests, and in partnership with the students’ primary supervisors. This intervention is a response to the crisis in doctoral supervisory capacity that a number of universities in the continent face.
The CODESRIA College Mentors is composed of senior academics from the Diaspora and within Africa, who have agreed to devote part of their time to support students in African universities through helping them develop their research proposals, read and comment on drafts of their dissertation chapters, share with the student’s current literature relevant to their area of study, and where possible, help the students publish part of their work as journal articles. An institute bringing together the selected students will be held at the beginning, for purposes of induction and setting in place working modalities. The College of Mentors will both complement and strengthen the support in capacity building in African universities that CODESRIA is engaged in through the “CODESRIA Doctoral Support Program. Doctoral Students wishing to be considered for support under this intervention should be those at the early stages of their doctoral work.
