End Year Message from the Executive Secretary

Dakar, Senegal 2019

Number of visits: 3595

As the year 2019 comes to an end, the Council will remain closed from 20th December 2019. Staff will be on holidays until 6th January 2020. On behalf of the Executive Committee and of the all staff, I wish to thank the CODESRIA community for the engagement during the year. We appreciated feedback on programmes, took note of and, where possible, tried to address inquiries from the community to the best of our capacities. We have been encouraged throughout the year and hope to pick up from and upscale the interaction next year.

In 2019, the Council resolved several management challenges that had rendered efficient and effective programme implementation difficult. The Council achieved an unqualified audit of the 2018 accounts of the Council for the first time since 2013. The Council also successfully went through a SIDA commissioned evaluation of the management and internal control systems. Together, these achievements galvanised funding partners with the addition of Ford Foundation as a new partner and a renewal of the Andrew Mellon Foundation grant. Further, working in partnership with the Arab Council for the Social Sciences that is based in Beirut, Lebanon, the Council is at an advanced stage of discussing with SIDA the launch of a 3 years programme on the Sahel. These, together with continuing support from Carnegie Corporation of New York and the New Executive Fund of the Open Society Foundation, assures us that the Council is back as a partner of choice. We are more committed to a transparent system that ensures resources are directed to programmes and will maintain this commitment in the new year.

In 2020, we will double our efforts on programme delivery. While the Research and Training, Grants and Fellowship Programmes have stabilized and are operating almost optimally, we have more work to do with our Publications and Dissemination Programme. The Council is aware that more needs to be done on this front and both the Executive Committee and Scientific Committee have prioritised this for 2020. We plan to recruit new staff and set high targets. This will include speedy processing of manuscripts, prompt responses to publishing needs within the community, clearing of old and new backlog, and ensure that we grow publishing partnerships that revitalise the historic mandate of the Council and enhance CODESRIA’s visibility and impact. To this end, the Council will renew editorial teams of journals and renegotiate support to sister institutions whose publications we support. It is important that we have all CODESRIA journals up-to-date in 2020.

However, the agenda for 2020 will not succeed without support from the community. Other than applying to CODESRIA programmes in large numbers and sharing with the Secretariat your achievements for dissemination on our increasingly active mailing list and on social media, we urge members of the community to pay up their membership dues for 2020. This is easy. An icon for paying membership is in the signature of all emails from the Council, including this email. We look forward to acknowledging your contribution.

On behalf of the Executive Committee, the Secretariat and on my own behalf, I wish you happy holidays, smooth transition into the new year and a rewarding and prosperous 2020.

Godwin R. Murunga
Executive Secretary
