Prof. Iba Der Thiam passes on

Number of visits: 360

CODESRIA wishes to announce with much sadness the passing on of the Senegalese scholar and statesman, Prof. Iba Der Thiam. Prof. Thiam was a leading scholar of modern Senegalese history and the author of a large corpus of work on labor history and the history of Senegal. He taught at the Université Cheick Anta Diop (UCAD) for decades, including after his retirement. He trained and mentored generations of historians from Senegal as well as other African countries who studied at UCAD. He was actively involved in the work of CODESRIA and was mostly recently the director of the CODESRIA-hosted General History of Senegal project that seeks to produce over 20 volumes on Senegalese history. The first 5 volumes published were the subject of widespread heated debate in the country.

Prof. Thiam’s interest in labor and politics went beyond the purely academic realm. He was also a dedicated labor activist and leading statesman who played important roles in the country’s transition to democratic rule. Once imprisoned for his labor activism and political activities, he went on to serve as a parliamentarian and held the position of First Vice President of the country’s National Assembly. He also served as Minister of National Education from 1983-1988. He was awarded the honor of the Commander of the National Order of the Lion, by President Macky Sall in 2018.

Iba Der Thiam was a Pan-Africanist whose work went far beyond the confines of Senegal. As a Senegalese state Minister, he was involved in the 1987 Dakar Conference/Dialogue that eventually helped to shape later discussions between the African National Congress and the Apartheid Regime in the transition to a free South Africa.

Prof. Thiam will be sorely missed by many including his fellow historians as well as the larger community of scholars in the social sciences and humanities in Africa. CODESRIA wishes to extend its condolences and those of the community it represents to Prof. Thiam’s family, including Marema Toure-Thiam, his spouse who is a current member of CODESRIA’s Scientific Committee. May his soul rest in perfect peace!

CODESRIA invites members of the community to share their condolences with the below form.
