Mahmood Mamdani who is a Herbert Lehman Professor of Government at The University of Columbia in New York City, Founding Director of The Center for Social Research based in Kampala, current Executive Director of the Makerere Institute of Social Research at Makerere University in Kampala, was awarded with an honorary doctorate by the University of Johannesburg (UJ) on the 25th May 2010 and by Addis Ababa University (AAU) on the 24th July 2010. Professor Mamdani was the President of CODESRIA from 1998 to 2002. He is a renowned author who has been named one of the top hundred public intellectuals in the world by the publication ‘Foreign Affairs’ (in 2008), attesting to the fact that his voice has won the favor of many beyond the academic community. His most recent publications include : Saviors and Survivors : Darfur, Pölitics, and the War on Terror (Dakar : CODESRIA, 2010) ; Scholars in the Market Place : The Dilemmas of Neo-Liberal Reform at Makerere University 1989-2005 (Dakar : CODESRIA, 2007) ; and Good Muslim, Bad Muslim (New York and Dakar : Pantheon Books and CODESRIA, 2004).
Mamdani received his Doctor of Letters honoris causa from Addis Ababa University, together with H.E. Thabo Mbeki, former President of South Africa (who received a Doctor of Laws honoris causa), the Ethiopian athlete Halle Gebreseliassie (who received a Doctor of Humane Letters honoris causa), and an Australian doctor called Catherine Hamlin (who received a Doctor of Medical Sciences honoris causa).
