Governance Institute

This annual intensive institute on governance promotes the exchange of experiences among researchers, activists, policy-makers, and others around a specific topic directly related to governance in Africa.

CODESRIA’s Governance Institute is an interdisciplinary effort to bring together African scholars working on topics related to governance. The aim of the Institute is to promote research and debates on issues relating to the conduct of public affairs and management of development in Africa.

The Institute was launched in 1992 and is organised in collaboration with Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar, Senegal. It is designed to bring together and forge links among, and meet the needs of a new generation of scholars in terms of access to recent documentation, participation in current debates on governance and democracy within the social sciences, and retooling research methodologies. A total of thirteen to fifteen African and a few non-African scholars participate in the Institute each year.

The objectives are:

- to encourage the sharing of experiences and methods among researchers around a common theme over an extended period of time;

- to promote and enhance a culture of democratic values that allows Africans to effectively manage issues confronting Africa;

- to foster a critical participation of scholars in the discussions on democratisation and governance in Africa.
