Training of Trainers Workshop 2016: Qualitative and Quantitative Methods in Social Science Research

Deadline: 30 April 2016

Theme: Qualitative and Quantitative Methods in Social Science Research
Date: 8-12 August 2016
Venue: Dakar, Senegal

Are you a lecturer responsible for teaching research methods in an African university or an African academic in the diaspora teaching research methods? If so, this call for applications targets you.

The Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) is pleased to announce the 2016 session of the training of trainers’ workshop targeting academics/associate researchers who are responsible for teaching social science research methods in their universities.

In cognizance of the crises that higher education in Africa has faced over the decades, emanating from multifaceted challenges, and the subsequent erosion of capacity in the teaching of some disciplines, CODESRIA has over the years been engaged in processes aimed at alleviating the impact of the crisis on the academic life in the institutions. Core to these engagements have been interventions aimed at retooling postgraduate students and mid-career academics by offering them opportunities for training in qualitative and quantitative research methods. The rationale for the CODESRIA methodology workshops targeting young scholars and associate researchers in charge of teaching methodology courses in the social sciences is to enable the latter an opportunity to engage with and master the technical procedures, the philosophical and epistemological underpinnings related to methodology in the social science disciplines. As fields of knowledge, qualitative and quantitative methodologies are critical to research and knowledge generation in the social sciences and researchers need to fully master their technical details and philosophical underpinnings. Moreover, the field of social science research methods, both qualitative and quantitative, has evolved considerably, with new tools and techniques available to researchers. Within African social science research, it is appreciated that the massive brain drain and the funding crisis that has affected higher education institutions has resulted to little effort in renewing scholarship in the social sciences especially with regard to pedagogical trends in research methodology. These developments have mostly disadvantaged the young generation of social science researchers and are often reflected in poor quality outcomes from research engagements. The training of trainers programme is one of the interventions developed by CODESRIA to try and close this gap in the study of the social sciences in African universities. The training of trainers’ workshop is designed and organized in a manner that it provides a context an organic inter-connection between the research objectives of universities and the programmatic strategy of the Council.

The 2016 session of the training of trainers’ workshop will bring together about ten laureates. The workshop will be conducted in French and English. In addition to presentations by resource persons, the workshop will be structured as a forum for close interactions and networking between participants so that, beyond the formal training session, they can continue to share their experiences in teaching qualitative and quantitative social science research methods. A pedagogical committee of experienced teachers in social science research will facilitate the training of trainers’ workshop for five days.

Those interesting in applying for the 2016 session of the training of trainers as laureates are invited to submit:

1. One duly completed application form;
2. A cover letter;
3. An outline of their courses;
4. A short write-up on the major challenges they encounter in teaching their methodology course;
5. An attestation from their departmental head or dean indicating that they do teach courses in methodology;
6. And a copy of their latest Curriculum Vitae.
