Job Announcement: Lecturer/Senior Lecturer (5 Year Contract) – URBAN STUDIES PROGRAMME

FACULTY OF ENGINEERING AND THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT

The African Centre for Cities (ACC) was established in 2007 at the University of Cape Town as an urban research institute.
The ACC is based in the School of Architecture, Planning and Geomatics in the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, but is interdisciplinary in its scope, drawing expertise on urban issues from across the university. The mission of the ACC is to “facilitate critical urban research and policy discourses for the promotion of vibrant, democratic and sustainable urban development in the global South”. The ACC has been awarded funding by the Andrew W. Mellon
Foundation to develop and run an interdisciplinary postgraduate programme on Urban Studies. We invite applications for this five-year position of Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in this programme. The main purpose of this position is to participate in the
design, piloting, running, and teaching of a new interdisciplinary Masters in Urban Studies and PhD support programmes, based in the African Centre for Cities and including a number of departments in various Faculties that will focus on Southern
urbanism from an African perspective. In addition, undertaking relevant research on Southern urbanism and/or the teaching of urban studies in the global South will also be required.

Requirements include:

 For appointment at Lecturer level, a PhD in a relevant field, and relevant research and postgraduate teaching experience.
 For appointment at Senior Lecturer level, a PhD and significant relevant research and postgraduate teaching experience.
 Interest in and some experience with developing university-level curricula and coordinating university-level courses would be preferable.
 A research and publication track record related to issues in cities in the global South and/or teaching urban studies in the global South would be preferable.

Responsibilities include:

 Teaching on the programme and supervising Masters and Ph.D. dissertations/theses where necessary.
 Undertaking relevant research relating to the content of the Urban Studies programme, and publishing research outputs in ISI journals and scholarly books.
 Contributing to the design of the curriculum for the Masters, including liaison with module convenors and review of draft course materials, testing of curriculum through piloting of courses, accreditation of the programme, and preparation of new course materials where necessary.
 Supporting and participating in an inter-faculty working group to develop the programme and organising annual inter-faculty workshops to review the curriculum.
 Contributing to a PhD support programme for graduates of the Masters programme and recruiting PhD supervisors.
 Marketing of programme, contributing to recruitment and selection of students, and running of programme.

The 2016 annual cost of employment ranges, at the respective levels, are between:
 R417 720 and R558 915 for Lecturer post; and
 R476 701 and R687 208 for a Senior Lecturer post
