Round Table on the Malian Crisis

12 December 2012

The crisis and political instability shaking Mali, with the occupation of part of its territory, the imposition of Sharia law in the North of the country, discussions involving ECOWAS, the AU and the United Nations in view of a military intervention, the harassment of women, and the risk of destruction of the tens of thousands of manuscripts in the City of Timbuktu are issues of great concern to all Africans and present major challenges to the social scientists. What understanding should one have of the situation? Doesn’t the resignation of Cheick Modibo Diarra, the Prime Minister and his government sound like a new warning? What are the likely consequences of this crisis on the rest of West Africa?

The Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) would like to invite you to a round table discussion involving mainly Dr Hamidou Magassa, a Malian linguist and anthropologist at SERNES (Bamako, Mali) and Ms Fatoumata Siré Diakité, Former Ambassador, and President and Founder of the Association for the Advancement and Defence of Women’s Rights. The roundtable will be held at CODESRIA Headquarters on 12 December 2012, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
