The Institute of African Studies (IAS) : Post-Doctoral Fellowship Announcement
The Institute of African Studies (IAS) is participating in a research project consortium involving the Makerere Institute of Social Research (MISR), Makerere University, Uganda; The Center for Arab and Middle East Studies (CAMES), at the American University of Beirut, Lebanon; the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Kolkata, India; and the Ifriqiyya Colloquium at Columbia University, New York, USA on the topic of ‘Decolonization, the Disciplines and University’ funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation from 2019 to 2023.
The project is anchored in an ongoing reflection on the following questions:
- What should be the mission of the university in a post-colonial context?
- What should be the relationship between the twin vocations of a scholar and a public intellectual, in a decolonizing context?
- How should this mission be reflected in our curriculum?
- The IAS research team is using decolonization as a lens to study the disciplines of History, Philosophy and African Studies.
One post-doctoral fellowship will be awarded each year under the partnership for 4 years. Each fellowship is worth USD 22,500.
As well as their own research project, the selected candidate is also expected to participate in selected workshops and institutes organized as part of the activities of the consortium
Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons for a post-doctoral fellowship for 2021/2022.
Eligibility
Eligible applicants should have obtained a Ph.D degree within the last 6 years (2015-2020) in any of the following areas:
- African History
- African Studies
Females are particularly encouraged to apply.
Submission
Applicants should submit to the address below, a letter and a proposal of interest of no more than 2,000 words.
The proposal should demonstrate familiarity and knowledge of the literature and issues and must include the following:
- A conceptual framework
- Research objectives and methods
- Α work plan indicating the work to be completed with the grant.
The successful applicant must be ready and willing to take up the position by the first (1st) of April 2021, to last until 31st March, 2022, and will sign a contract committing to satisfactory performance and working within the objectives of the overall research programme.
